How Can I Prevent Back Pain at Work? 5 Practical Tips

June 2026 • Dr David Chapman (Chiropractor) • Centrepoint Chiropractic Clinic, Caboolture South

After more than forty years of looking after working backs in Caboolture, I can tell you that most work-related back pain doesn't arrive with a bang. It creeps up — a long week of sitting, a rushed lift, the same task done a thousand times. The good news is that the habits that protect your back are simple, and none of them cost a cent. Whether you're on the tools, behind a desk or driving the Bruce Highway every day, here are the five I find myself talking about most.

1. Change Position Every 30 Minutes

Your spine is built for movement, not for holding one position all day — it'll put up with almost any posture for a little while, and almost none for hours on end. Stand up, stretch, walk to the printer, swap tasks. It sounds too simple to matter, but frequent small breaks do more for your back than one long one. If you tend to lose track of time, a reminder on your phone does the trick.

2. Plan Your Lifts — and Keep the Load Close

In my experience it's rarely the heavy, careful lift that catches people out. It's the rushed, awkward one — reaching, twisting, half-balanced. Take a second before you lift: clear the path, hold the load close to your body, bend through your hips and knees, and move your feet rather than twisting through your back. If it's too heavy or too awkward, get a hand or use the trolley. And a word to the tradies: that tired lift out of the ute tray at the end of the day is the one I hear about most.

3. Set Up Your Seat — at the Desk and in the Car

If you work at a desk: screen at eye height, feet flat on the floor, and sit right back so the chair supports your lower back rather than your shoulders doing the work. And don't forget the car — if you're commuting an hour each way to Brisbane, that's part of your working day as far as your back is concerned. Bring the seat close enough that your knees stay relaxed, and use the lumbar adjustment if you have one. Good posture habits at the desk and behind the wheel add up over a working week.

4. Build General Strength and Fitness Outside Work

This is the one with the strongest research behind it: regular exercise does more to keep back pain from coming back than back belts, fancy chairs or any gadget on the market. It doesn't have to mean a gym membership — walking, swimming and simple strengthening exercises all count. A back that's used to working is a back that copes with work. If you haven't exercised in a while, or you have a health condition or an old injury, have a chat with your GP or a health professional before starting a new program — the right starting point is different for everyone.

5. Act on Early Niggles Instead of Pushing Through

Queenslanders are great at soldiering on, but a back that keeps complaining is trying to tell you something. Pain that keeps returning, hangs around for more than a couple of weeks, or starts travelling down a leg deserves a proper look. Easing off the heavy tasks early and getting an assessment is a far smaller interruption to your working life than a problem that's been let settle in.
